Ladies' 4s 1 - 5 Staines Ladies' 1s

After a long drive down to Staines through torrential rain we finally arrived. We started the match strong, putting consistent pressure on their forwards and keeping our heads. They had a few break throughs into the D but they were quickly broken down by our defenders. Our D entries were less frequent despite some good triangular play in the midfield. This type of play continued through the very cold rain as we worked hard up and down the pitch. We had a few clean breaks with some lovely through balls from Claire and Vicky but unfortunately this didn’t amount to a goal. In the last 5 minutes of the first half, Staines hit the baseline and entered the D, managing to score a scrappy goal despite excellent attempts to slow them down from Trin and the defence. At half time we huddled in the dugouts for a quick team talk  - with Haribo of course!

We went into the second half optimistically and wanting a win. However we couldn’t find the goal and conceded a second goal to Staines. This knocked our confidence a bit but we still kept going and had some clever play from the half backs and inners who quickly passed the ball around the Staines players. Unfortunately Staines scored a third goal soon after some more scrappy play. We held them off further despite several defensive short corners and some questionable umpiring decisions. In the last few minutes, there was a lovely ball played down the line which was then passed to Rom who drove around the D and slipped it to Abi who in one movement passed the ball to Karen who went for goal! Charlotte followed up the ball after Karen’s shot and put it in the net! Although this was uplifting and what we needed, it wasn’t enough to pull back the game and unfortunately Staines scored another 2 goals, although we tried our hardest to slow them down. The match finished with a penalty flick which was confidently saved by Trin. The final score was 5-1.  Players of the match were Lottie for some excellent defensive skill and calm on the ball and also Trin for protecting the goal incredibly and saving many many goals!
