Following a contentious defeat at the hands of Eastcote, it was back to winning ways for the men's 4’s as they overcame a much improved Marlow 3’s side. In the reverse fixture, it would be fair to say the 6-2 scoreline reflected Hawks’ dominance. This time round, the performance was far from convincing yet 2-1 did not necessarily vindicate the balance of play.

In the opening ten minutes, it looked as though Hawks would blitz the opposition. Chris Maidlow was a constant thorn in Marlow’s defence, and his perseverance paid off- after being found all on his own in the D, Maidlow took a wild swing at the ball before confidently dispatching the ball to put Hawks ahead. Only minutes later, Brett Morrison superbly assisted Maidlow - his second of the game - who executed a superb off-drive at the back post to double his and Hawks’ goal tally.

As alluded to, it looked as though Hawks might walk away with this one, but Marlow somehow rallied and pulled themselves back in to the fixture through a well taken penalty flick after the ball was judged to hit a Hawks foot on the line. The remainder of the first half played out to a 2-1 scoreline.

Hawks proved to be a little careless in possession during the second half and invited a great deal of pressure - Marlow were knocking at the door and Hawks were almost prepared to let them in.

There was little else to report in this period, other than a couple of well taken - and then saved - penalty corners by Barnaby Barber. Although Hawks were unable to add to their two goal tally, it proved to be enough as Marlow were unable to break the 4's down- they saw this close encounter out 2-1 and breathe a little easier at the three-quarter season interval. 3rd place in the division is still very much up for grabs.

Many thanks to Evelyn Hargraves for the great photos.
