The Mens 7's lined up with a solid squad of 15 for a late afternoon fixture against Witney 3's, a familiar foe who we've met for many seasons and generally come away on top. The league standing suggested Hawks should win but we take nothing for granted.
Hawks started brightly and we must have come close on at least 3 occasions but our final finish let us down. We also were sloppy in our passing and managed to give the ball away and allow Witney the chance to attack. At times our defense was a mixture of cricket and golf as the ball flew around at head height. And so a poor pass between Venables and Raynor led to an attack which caught the defense off guard and Witney led 1-0 at half time.
Half time was a period of reflection and we came out determined to make amends. Shirley got the game level with a well struck short corner to the left of the goal. Hawks then started to play a more expansive game and both Dolly and Sam Volans started to dominate in midfield. Dolly got the winner with a solo effort in the D. We had the opportunity to extend the lead but again failed to find the net and were lucky not to concede a draw with a Graham double air shot clearance in the final seconds leading to a Witney short corner which we were able to defend well.
2-1 was an ugly win, but a win that extends our 2nd place position. MOM was Dolly who worked hard all game and honourable mentions to Leo in goal who once again made some fine clearances.
Thanks to Cookie and Chair for umpiring and to Evelyn Hargraves for the great photos.
