Derby days always bring a sense of anticipation and excitement in the air and today’s game did not disappoint.
Despite being given inconsistent postcode directions for one of the closest away games this season, the team made it on time and with playing shirts. Some performance enhancing coffee consumption assisted preparations and whilst a perplexing sock arrangement provided DoD nominations, this did not deter a focused and high tempo start.
Hawks started brightly linking well and putting pressure high up the pitch. These efforts were rewarded with a slick move from Henri finding Kathryn to slot in the first goal of the day. Some words from Wilko assisted by 2s ‘manager of the year Claudia’, the team rallied for a nail-biter 2nd half.
Oxford started the better demonstrating quality of their own, equalising in open play. A series of events followed involving a Hawks green card, the umpire falling over and it starting to rain. None of which affected Hawks resilient defending and improving game management. In particular Paigey in goal and hard graft from Scraggle, Harri and MoM “Cavmeister”.
Birthday girl Lucy was able to carve out a lovely move with the cameo forward line of Helen and Haza (aka Miriam), and a few short corners later Rosie found the back of the net with a sublime drag flick. With second half nerves put to bed a fine bit of play from Wato, Sandra and Connie assisted Lily to coolly finish for the final goal of the day.
Thanks go to the supporters of Mr Roche and the Scraggle entourage (also known as the crèche).
We go again next week, all to play for and in the words of Wilko, the job is not done.
