Top of the League Away...

Men's 5s 0 - 6 Abingdon Men's 1s

Arriving at an away fixture asking "have we got 11?" is not necessarily the best question to have to ask, especially when the opposition is top of the league. However thanks to some behind the scenes deals the 5s managed a tidy 14, including Nick and Francis up from the 7s and Zack joining us again from the 6s. All were very welcome additions with their tireless work during the game.

The game started off relatively well against a team that gas dominated the league so far and Hawks showed fighting spirit across the pitch. Abingdon did have the better of the game and soon managed to sneak a back post deflection in. Hawks responded, as has become our custom, in undeterred fashion, continuing to compete across the pitch, generally making a nuisance of themselves for the Abingdon attack. Despite all efforts Abingdon managed to sneak a couple of goals in before the break, both of which required more than a little good fortune.

Half-time came and despite a generally negative attitude from yours truly (sorry) Hawks had a lot of positives to take forwards. The second half played out in a very similar fashion, with Hawks competing well and creating chances, just not quite being able to convert. A relentless Abingdon were able to find goals when it mattered despite a very solid defensive showing which frustrated their forwards. Three more goals followed including a thundering shot off the underside of the crossbar. Full Time 6-0 Abingdon but for the second time in two weeks the result was not fully reflective of the game.

Congratulations also go to Zack, who looked a real threat, Jamie, who was tireless in midfield, and to MoM Todd who kept a former national league player in check during the game and was just generally always there in defence, we wish his finger a swift recovery after a nasty impact right at the death, and hope he is back in the line-up soon.

Wycombe follow next week and if the 5s can maintain the positive style of play there will be points up for grabs.
