Ladies 2s beat Marlow in a nail-biter
29 January 2022, 11:30, Banbury Road North (Near)
Ladies' 2s 4 - 3 Marlow Ladies 1s
As a team pushing to win the league, our pre match brief from Wilko focused on the need for some increased professionalism, to be more prompt, to smarten up a bit etc etc etc. Scraggle clearly missed that memo as she (or was it hubby Matt?) managed to mislay her car keys and then couldn’t then access the shirts, her stick, or for that matter get to BRN. A few phone calls later, Plan Bs and Cs activated, Scraggle and an old set of shirts appeared and Wilko's face looked a bit less thunderous. This was a proper top of the table 6 pointer against Marlow who were just a couple of points behind the 2s at the start of the day. Things started brightly as Hawks pressed well and Claud won the ball in their 25. One pass to Odders, who smashed it home on the reverse stick, 1-0. The lead didn’t last long though as Marlow scored with a loopy deflection from the second phase of a short corner, 1-1. Hawks almost scored again when Sandra narrowly deflected wide after an inspired through ball from Scraggle, but her effort went agonisingly wide. The 2s however then stepped up a gear and scored 2 in quick succession. First was Wato, back after recovering from a festive football injury, who finished from close range, and next was Odders with her second goal, volleying into the roof of the net from the second phase of a corner. 3-1 at half time, all looking nice.
However the second half didn't quite start as planned, as 5 minutes later it was 3-3. Just liked to keep things interesting for the crowd perhaps? The rest of the half was a tense affair, with a few chances at either end - Connie Potts at half back on fine form and thoroughly deserving of her MOM award. Pagey in goal was on top form throughout the whole match too, pulling off some big saves at big moments. About ten minutes from the end Sandra Roche drove skillfully in from the right, and her first shot was well saved. Keeper gave it straight back to Sandra for another go, and that was saved too. Keeper gave it straight back to Sandra again, who this time squared to Kathryn Poulter for an easy finish. 4-3. Hawks managed the rest of the game well and the clock counted down to give the home side the 3 points, which takes them back to the top of the league.
Many thanks to Evelyn Hargraves for the excellent photos.
