Ladies 5s Battle Hard Against Bicester 1s

22 January 2022, 10:00, Cooper School

Ladies' 5s 1 - 3 Bicester Ladies' 1s

The thermostat finally rose above 0 and the ladies 5s sighed a collective sigh of relief that the game was a go (and the likelihood of another double header weekend due to rearranged fixtures was reduced!).

With a focused training session behind them, they headed to Bicester with some New Year's Resolutions:
1. Get some outcomes in the D; and
2. Improve possession

The 5s also came armed with a new demographic structure (jokingly nicknamed "the sandwich"). Your gentle author and Monica allegedly make up the middle of said sandwich. If she is chutney, does that make me the cheese?

The 5s welcomed Emily and Jess to their ranks and the enlarged junior cohort were soon teaching the more experienced members a new trick or two (mostly how to deal with lockscreen on an iPhone).

The whistle was blown and the team faced down some tough Bicester opposition. The first 15 minutes were difficult, Hawks conceded two goals (the second of which I'm told hit at least one oppo foot on its way in). Then something clicked and all the lessons we'd learnt from training began to kick in.

Hawks began to press and look threatening in the Bicester D and the last 10 minutes of the 1st half felt much more even. Hawks executed a very slick short corner routine and at the other end of the pitch our excellent defensive line up saw off every short corner attempt by Bicester.

Hawks came out strong in the second half and after a pass up the middle of the pitch from Kayleigh to Molly in the D, Molly crossed the ball to Sherene who wasted no time in a one touch sweep that sent the ball flying passed the keeper straight into the goal!

Hawks kept up the attacking pressure with Shereen unlucky to score another and Kelly also unlucky not to net one after a tense 1 on 1 with the keeper. Safe to say the ladies 5s firmly achieved their first resolution and secured plenty of threatening outcomes in the Bicester D.

The final whistle blew and the team headed to The Shakespeare Pub ("you know, the playwright?" - yes, thanks Captain) where lots of players received nominations for player of the match representing the great play that happened all over the pitch. However, it was Jess who was voted winner on her debut for the 5s!
