After what felt like 17 variations of this week’s plan (thanks to Covid, frozen pitches and pitch availability) Hawks Ladies’ 1s finally took to the pitch against a different opposition, on a different day, at a different time and on a different pitch than plan A!

Though some say change is good (Andy might not agree?!) and Hawks showed this as they went one up inside the first few minutes. Player of the match, Lexie Spurr driving down the right, along the baseline and then popping the ball across for Tiny to appear at the perfect moment to deflect the ball past the keeper. Hawks continued to link well and create a few chances but couldn’t extend their lead before quarter time.

The Uni began to get the upper hand in the second quarter and the home side had to work hard to deny them any goal scoring opportunities. Hawks composed, simple, passing game seemed like a distant memory with the only highlight of the quarter coming with a few minutes remaining. Jemima Spurr providing Emily Smith with a perfectly weighted pass from which she coolly beat a few players and slipped the ball under the keeper for a two nil lead going into half time.

Hawks returned to their passing game in the third quarter - creating chances and thwarting a few isolated Uni attacks. Mid-way through the quarter Gemma Croker added her name to the scoresheet with composed work in the D to beat the keeper from close range. In the closing stages Bex Oakes then joined in on the action scoring from a penalty corner variation.

The final quarter saw Hawks continuing to put the students under lots of pressure but despite creating numerous chances they failed to find the back of the net. In a frantic few minutes Hawks suffered three injuries (apparently, it’s not recommended to deflect the ball into your teammate when bringing down an aerial!) but despite yet more change Hawks kept the upper hand and saw out the game with their four goal advantage intact.

Hawks continue their build up to the league when they welcome Barnes next Saturday.

Thanks to Evelyn Hargraves for the great photos.
