Scintillating Sixes slam-dunk during snowstorm

Ladies' 6s 5 - 3 Oxford Ladies 5s
On a blustery November day, Hawks Ladies 6s bravely donned many base layers, gloves and hats for the local derby against Oxford Ladies 5s. Within minutes of beginning the match, Storm Arwin arrived with a flurry of snow. Both teams courageously battled on through the arctic conditions, with a few good attacks from both sides. Despite the blizzard conditions, Hawks L6s pulled together and Linda scored the first goal mid-way through the first half with a spectacular pea roller. Unfortunately, Oxford were quick to even up the score line. Some stellar passing by the midfield and dynamic play from the forwards saw Hawks regain the lead, with a goal by Polly. But Oxford weren’t to be easily put off, and again caught up within minutes, leaving the score as 2-2 at half time.
The half-time pep talk by Phil and Susan (sub-manager) warmed the minds (if not hands) of the L6s. Thankfully the blizzard had diminished by now, and the L6s returned to the pitch determined to take the win. Hawks quickly took the lead with another goal from Polly, but again Oxford refused to give up and scored an equaliser within minutes. The L6s persisted through the ice cold wind and freezing conditions, and two more excellent goals were scored by CaitIin and Lotty. Strong defending kept out any more Oxford goals, for Hawks L6s to take a 5-3 win. Despite the win, it wasn’t the L6s best performance, but we can probably put it down to many very numb body parts!
Many thanks to last week’s POMs, Jess and Yas, for their very tasty brownies and (definitely homemade) Victoria sponge. Congratulations to Emily for being this week’s POM. Thanks to Susan for managing the subs.
