Ladies Over 45s knock Berkhamstead out with a thumping win

21 November 2021, 12:00, RAF Halton

Ladies O45s 14 - 0 Berkhamstead & Hemel Hempstead Ladies O45s

After a close fought win in the league, the O45s travelled to RAF Halton to play BHHHC in the EH Tier 2 competition. The first challenge of the day was to plan the travel arrangements. BRN was rocking with all the junior hockey but meant that the car park was rammed, and even though parents from visiting clubs were told there were no parking spaces, they still pushed through with their 4x4s and caused chaos …. Thank goodness that one of the parents took control and did a very good impression of a traffic controller. Calls came through that the Wheatley crew were running late, the blame was put on Rebecca. Karen then delayed the other car to scoff a pre-match egg butty. Eventually everyone found the pitch and the game was on.

Now being a slightly older aged team, one of the most important parts of the pre-match routine is a trip to the loo. The bladder is not as reliable as it once was, and we wanted to avoid any mishaps on the pitch. So as you can imagine, we panicked when the home team couldn’t find the key to the pavilion, and we were left to look around for appropriate bushes. To our relief, not literally, the key was found, and the pre-match activities were complete.

So, the hunt for the missing key meant that we were a little late starting the game. The warm-up was a bit rushed, but it didn’t stop the team going all out from the first whistle. From the back it was a little like watching Liverpool …. high press, stealing the ball at every opportunity and the forwards running riot and converting many of their chances. 6-0 up at half-time with a brace each from Kelly, Sherene and Rebecca with Dr Clare being instrumental in attack.

The chat at half-time was more of the same, maintain the discipline in our structure, continue making connections, use the space and we knew we would score more goals. Sue, Hoops, Jane and Vicky controlled the middle and anything that did get through was dealt with by Jacs, Susan and Linda. 8 more goals followed in the second half, it could have been a few more had Karen put a bit more effort in, but Tam, Sophie and (eventually Karen) joined the scorers list and 3 hat-tricks were claimed …….. ok Kelly ended with 4 but was adamant it was 5 (not competitive at all!!) as she moved ahead in the clubs top scoring tally once more.

Back to the clubhouse for teas, even though Hoops decided to drive along the A41 twice!!!! Tam’s cakes were rather scrummy, and we wish her all the best with her impending hip operation. We now await our next opponents to be played on 12th December. Oh, and Kelly found her knickers!
