Hawks Men's 7s captain decided to dispense with his own pre-match script and instead used the Ladies 5's team notes which had been left stuck to the back to the dug out from the game before...

  • Attack wide/ Defend Narrow
  • Keep Possession
  • Communicate on and off the ball

Pretty simple stuff and just how hockey should be played.

This week we played Berkhamstead and H Hempstead 5's who are at the bottom of the table, but nothing should be taking for granted as the last two games against Aylesbury and Oxford were within our grasp and yet the outcome didn't go the way we wanted.

We started pretty scrappily but the general pattern of play was one in which the Magnificents kept possession and territory with very occasional incursions into our half which were dealt with efficiently by Image and Shirley. We only looked vulnerable once when B&HH managed to break and we were caught high and vulnerable, but Theo confidently kicked the ball to safety.  Otherwise Hawks were pretty strong in the press and frequently intercepted passes from 16's.  Nick Tonkin used his speed to jump on any loose balls and generally harried very effectively all game.

After what seemed an age, but in truth was only about 5 mins, we secured our first goal with a somewhat scrappy goal mouth deflection from James B (elevate to the front line in the absence of McGrigor or Darby). We then started to play some decent hockey and did put together some good passes and deliver the ball wide to both left and right.

By half time we were 5-0 up (*) but conscious of the same situation 2 weeks ago that then resulted in a 5-5 draw.

This time the Magnificents pushed on with a fine brace from Richard Webb and a final score of 10-0 (*).

Thanks to Jacqui and Phil for umpiring and to Evelyn Hargraves for the great photos.

Man of the Match goes to Nick Tonkin who ran his socks off and generally had a great game.

(*) by the way, Steve Elliott got a few goals today...and missed a few (as did others)...well played Steve!
