Men's 4's dismantle Wallingford 2's

13 November 2021, 14:45, Wallingford HC

Men's 4s 4 - 1 Wallingford Men's 2s

Hawks men’s 4’s recorded their fourth straight victory with a 4-1 win against Wallingford 2’s. The opposition have been difficult to beat in recent years, but they were up against a Hawks side who are bang in form.

The first half was as good as any 4’s performance in recent memory. Hawks passed and dribbled the ball with intent and prevented Wallingford from gaining any momentum. Hawks took the lead in the opening ten minutes through Guy Biggs with a finish from the tightest of angles - reminiscent of his goal against the 5’s earlier in the season. Their lead was then doubled by Luke Piper, who received the ball in acres of space on the left-hand side of the pitch before thudding the ball into the right-hand backboard of the goal.

There were a few anxious moments to overcome. Wallingford won a penalty corner midway through the first half and created a small handful of deflected shots at goal, but the 4’s were resolute at the back and would even increase their lead through man of the match Will Senior. He began dribbling with the ball just beyond the halfway line and despite looking for an attacking pass wide, space opened up before him and he soon found himself in the D. Senior got a shot away at Wallingford’s goal and found the right-hand side of the backboard to make it 3-0 at half time. Hawks were in a commanding position.

It wasn’t a stellar second half – Hawks were careless in possession of the ball and invited pressure from Wallingford. The opposition managed to pull a goal back after seven or eight minutes, which caused some discomfort for the 4’s. However, Tom Harris was a rock at the back for Hawks and maintained some composure when cool heads were required to see the game out.

The positive in the second half for the 4’s was that they didn’t collapse. In fact, they would go on to score a fourth goal - a goal-bound attempt from Luke Piper which was deflected over the line by Adam Laird. At the final whistle it finished a comfortable 4-1 to Hawks, who go into next weeks’ fixture vs high-flyers Abingdon full of confidence.
