On a glorious Autumnal afternoon the Mens 7 XI enjoyed a great afternoon of hockey against Berkamstead and Hemel Hempstead Mens 4s who were new comers to the rearranged league.
The Magnificents fielded a squad of 15 including a Hawks debut to Georges Artinos increasing our Greek contingent to 2 and joining GK Leo Eleftheriadis.
Hawks started brightly and could have been 1 up after 2 mins following a well struck hit by Elliott across the D which was just missed by the outstretched Darby.
Hawks soon started to dominate through a midfield combo of Dolly, Volans, Artinos and Venables. Our passing was pretty fluid and we used both wings efficiently whilst any attacking move was generally snuffed out by Stocker, Tonkins and Raynor at half back and fullback combos of Shirley, Hack and Image.
Such was the speed of the game that the author of this match report cant quite recall the exact details of the goals but suffice to say anyone willing to buy Steve Elliott a beer (or even just give him a couple of minutes of their time) will soon learn that he scored 3 goals in the first half followed by a further goal in the second. All goals were well taken and whilst somewhat cruel given this achievement...as always there could have been a few more...
Dolly was an active play maker in these goals and added one of his own towards the end of the first half before generously passing to the oppo in our 25 which allowed B&HH to claw one back, much to Leo's dismay.
In the 2nd half fitness got the better of Georges who limped off with a tight hamstring and Webb eased up with tight calf. B&HH started to exert a bit more pressure and Leo made a great deflected stick save. The Magnificents prevailed though adding two more through Elliott and Darby.
Elliott did the decent thing and bought a jug for both sides and more beer was enjoyed in the welcome surroundings of the clubhouse and excellent food from Jan and her team.
Jaqs and Hugh umpired efficiently as always.
Great to see Elliott on the leading goal scorers table....more to come next week?
