After a solid performance last week, Hawks were keen to build on their good work and win 3 points from their third game of the season against Exe.
In a frantic first quarter, both teams played some fast paced hockey with possession and chances split fairly evenly between the two teams. In the second quarter, the home side stepped up and began to dominate possession , playing some great passing hockey in their attacking 25. Against the run of play, Exe were awarded a short corner which they converted with a well-drilled drag flick routine, leaving the score line 1-0 to the visitors at half-time.
Hawks stepped it up a notch again in the second half, determined to correct the score line, and again dominated the majority of possession. They were rewarded with a penalty flick after a foul during a goal line scramble. Bex Oakes calmly slotted the flick home to even the score line to 1-1. Hawks continued to play well and had plenty of chances on goal, when player of the match, Gemma Croker, showed off her skills on the right and gave Hawks their second goal with a shot from the top of the D, finally putting Hawks in the lead.
Soon after, Hawks clumsily turned the ball over which Exe capitalised on and equalised from the counter-attack. Hawks didn't give up and continued to put everything forwards towards goal but after some continued pressure from Exe, another short corner was awarded against Hawks which Exe converted again with a good drag flick.
As Hawks tried to find a last minute equaliser, the final minutes of the game ran out and Hawks were left disappointed and frustrated with the result after what had been a good performance. Onto next week where they go again against Bristol University and go after those 3 points!
