Having missed a week with Epsom unwilling to travel due to the fuel crisis, Falcons went to Southampton looking forward to a good game and some much needed early season pitch time!
Struggling to field 11 players, the team was joined by Mark Crampton-Smith erstwhile pitchside sponsor of OHHC and Nige Doggett drove all the way from Rutland to the South Coast to make up numbers when he wasn't expecting to play. Thanks to both for outstanding commitment to the cause!
Southampton put up a strong defence from the start whilst Falcons dominated possession, but despite the possession it took a while for the pressure to show that is until Mark White pounced on a cross and forced the ball across the line!
Falcons pressure resulted in a number of short corners with a number being missed and when a goalbound flick was stopped on the goal line by an opponents chest Falcons expected but were disappointed not to receive a PF, feelings of it being "one of those days" were beginning to worry the team. But then Tony Robertson stepped up at the next short corner and slammed the ball tight into the corner beyond both keeper and defender.
The second half continued much the same as the first with Falcons continuing to spurn short corner opportunities, a change led to Nige Doggett stepping in to strike and in a replica of Tonys earlier goal he smashed Falcons third from the top of the D.
At this point Southampton had a couple of breaks, with one resulting in a short corner for the home team. Somehow Falcons failed to shut down a misfield and the Southampton midfielder was able to squeeze the ball down the inside channel to give them the slightest glimmers of hope at 3-1.
Man of the Match Tony Robertson then took a pass 23 yards out and ran a nice loop into the D and flicked the ball beyond goalkeeper and defenders returning the 3 goal gap and that's how it finished.
Next week Falcons are away to Winchester hoping for three from three and once again looks like we'll be struggling for 11 available players!
After match hospitality was enjoyed and thanks to Southampton for the food and drink, joint photo is attached!
