Oxford Hawks Women's 1st XI opened the new season with a home fixture against newly promoted Penarth. Hawks started well and put significant pressure on the visitors defence winning two early penalty corners and they came very close to opening the scoring when a Rosie Evans touch in front of goal was well saved by the Penarth keeper. Despite the early pressure, Hawks couldn't capitalise and Penarth came back into the game in the second quarter. However, with a solid team defence and Lydia De Pedro in the Hawks goal on good form, Penarth were kept out.
Going into the second half with the game still goal less, Hawks stepped up and once again put pressure on Penarth and created chances in the opposition circle. Another penalty corner was well struck by Claire Caruth and Hawks deservedly took the lead when Catherine Reaney expertly deflected the strike into the roof of the net. A well managed final quarter saw Hawks create further chances and despite not managing to extend their lead, were pleased to take three points from this opening game of the season.
Harri Hargreaves won the player of the match vote for an great performance at half back although competition was strong with several excellent performances in all areas of the pitch.
Congratulations to Connie Potts and Alice Potter who both made their National League debuts and many thanks to Jacqui Barlow who stood in as Match Official - squeezing the game in between umpiring two other games! Thanks also to Clive Jones for the excellent photos.
