For the last game of the winter season, the weather was unsettled but the team were determined to end on a high. The game started and it quickly became apparent the two teams were evenly matched, Hawks quickly won a short corner which was followed by two more but sadly none produced goals. All players showed much improved skill from the beginning of the season to now, forwards attacked the goal tenaciously and defenders didn’t give Oxford many attempts to score, and any attempts were quickly deflected by Trin our goalie. Emily did an impressive run up the pitch showing great ball control and put Oxford on a back foot. When a gap materialised, Deborah took the opportunity to do a strong pass avoiding several of the opposition resulting in moving the ball halfway up the pitch. Mids kept the ball flowing through solid play between not only themselves but also the rest of the team.
Half time bought talks about keeping a press on and looking back to pass the ball but then we were on again. The second half saw two determined teams back onto the pitch with Hawks taking possession and gaining a short corner. The ball was injected to Angie who did a strong pass to Liv, Liv slipped the ball back to Angie and she hit it at goal, a defender got to it, but the ball deflected off her stick on into the goal. The game continued with Oxford fighting to even the score, but with no success from them. The game ended with Hawks winning 1-0. As the umpire summarised there was honest endeavour by both teams. Everyone played very well as is evidenced by the many nominations for player of the match. There were nine: Kanari, Huei, Gill, Angie, Emily, Sallyan, Trinity, Jess, and Megan. The winner was Kanari who had an excellent game as right half, working hard, running fast on the ball with lovely skills.
Many thanks to Susan McErlain who managed the substitutions and coached us throughout the game.
