The L6 team was a mixture of new players, occasional players, and injured players who had not all played together before. Not to make excuses, but it was a mediocre performance and we certainly missed Rom, Molls and Harri as well. It was a beautiful day and for some, a great opportunity to play again after over 4 months of no hockey. Although we started with some promising connections with short triangles the L6 team soon became disjointed and gave the ball away on too many occasions.
The well drilled L7s who, having more of their core team, played well as a TEAM with determination and drive, and more importantly with the desire to win. Was it the sunny hot day that took it’s toll on L6s or just that we were rusty and unfamiliar with each other? The L7s had numerous opportunities and had it not been for Tehya’s fine goalkeeping performance under an, at times, aggressive attack, the L6s would have conceded. It was however the L6s who scored first from an unconvincing, and not quite as practiced at Weds training, short corner where the ball was dribbled over the line by Kayleigh. A second short corner was won just before half time whistle and this time was trickled over the line by new player Connie.
The determined L7s came out strong in the 2nd half and were dominant from the off. Lucille was outstanding with some strong drives down the wing. Juliette also shone on the opposite wing and it wasn’t long before the L7s were rewarded with a spectacular goal finished by Juliette with a deflection in the air. L6s centre mid Kayleigh worked tirelessly often under extreme pressure and on occasions out-skilled 4 opposition players to retain possession. The L6 mojo had unfortunately been lost and the L7s were still battling to equalise and with minutes to go before FT they were awarded a short corner. Having practiced their shorts in training they executed it well and were rewarded with a goal from Liz who had played extremely well all match. So a 2-2 draw.
We didn’t have an official MOM vote but I think Kayleigh deserves the outfield vote and Tehya was on top form and magnificent in goal so also deserves a vote.
Thanks to Dave Hughes and Sophie Dawes for umpiring and to Connie for the delicious post match cake.
