With blue skies and sunshine overhead a mixture of L6s and 7s came together as Team C to play away at Wallingford. Late arrivals due to traffic problems led to a somewhat disjointed warm up. However, with Hawks Team D vacating the pitch after their 4-0 win, thoughts were could Team C gel together to secure a 2nd Hawks victory.
From the first whistle Wallingford made some strong attacks but solid defending from Iona (playing her 2nd game in goal), Holly, Yas, Connie and Phil kept them at bay. The Hawks forwards, Kelly, Pip, Molly and Linda called for the ball to the played up the right and despite everyone’s best efforts a couple of chances game and went. Counter-attacks from a speedy Wallingford forward split the defence and by half time Wallingford were 2 goals up.
Keep possession, play little triangles and transfers were all mentioned as part of the team time talk. All were put into practice as Chloe, Romilly, Lydia, Evie and Kayleigh made some great connections and a quick ball out of defence found Linda lurking high and at last the ball was behind the Wallingford keeper to close the score to 1-2. Another fast break from Wallingford saw them take back their 2 goal lead but it didn’t take long before Kelly flicked the ball into the goal.
Hawks continued to have chances to level the score but the clock ran down before the opportunity arose to do so. With chocolate cake and flapjack awaiting Team C headed off to sit in the sunshine and vote for the player of the match. Plenty of names on the vote count but with most votes went to Connie. We look forward to some Argentine cakes next game!
Thanks to both our umpires Jacs and Dave who looked very smart in their coordinated umpire jackets!
