The Mighty Ladies Threes went on a day trip to Reading to play Pheonix and Ranleigh 1s. Whilst the day started a little slow with a good chunk of the team stuck venturing across Reading the threes had a point to prove coming off the back of two, possibly winnable, draws pre-Lockdown 2.0
P&R started off with confidence and with their not-so-typical formation caused a couple problems for the 3s. When I say problems, it was nothing the awesome defence couldn’t handle. Part way through the second half the 3s started to exert their dominance on the game keeping level heads whilst a few chances went begging. Whilst it took about 30 minutes to open the scoring, there was nothing wrong with the first goal with a fantastic deflection by Tam (Apologies, to whoever got the assist, I was simply too unfit and too far away from the action).
Were we happy to go into half time with a slender 1-0 lead? No! Only about a minute later and another goal for the 3s. This time for the one and only captain Lucy Birtles - turns out she’s wasted at full back. What a debut playing forward for the 3s it was. The ball came across from the right and Lucy was on hand for a not so easy tap in at the back post for her first ever league goal (Lucy – hopefully I’ve bigged it up enough)
Anyways, 2-0 at half time and the 3s were on a high with Tam taking over the team talk whilst Lucy took a few minutes to, rightly so, bask in her glory. The second half started just as the first half finished, with us pressing for a third to put the game to bed and that we did (kind of). Frankie getting her goal in open play and 2 for Beth from her killer slap from short corners. 5-0 to the 3s, dizzying heights! (Apparently, I also have to mention a certain co-captain missing a sitter set up by the one and only Lucy Birtles but I shan’t mention any names)
Was the game done? Not quite. P&R game back at us scoring from a short corner before scoring another 2 close to full time. Nothing we couldn’t handle…
MoM – Kasey B for a stellar performance as always
DoD – Minton
