Hawks travelled away to Banbury for the season opener of the Oxfordshire Div A league. The boys started strong, maintaining the width and passing the ball round nicely. George did an excellent job holding the centre and distributing beautifully. We were soon rewarded with some short corners and Wilf slotted home a lovely opening goal from the left. Mason exhibited some silky skills down the right-wing which Duncan would have been proud of, culminating in the 2nd goal of the match. The 3rd goal was the result of a nice finish from Nico. Oliver was unlucky not to score in his debut match, finding the post on at least one occasion. Banbury fought back well and were awarded a short corner which they capitalised on to narrow the gap. Half time score: 3-1.
The second half started with Hawks in control again. A Banbury player took a knock from an accidentally lifted ball and they went down to 6 players. We lost our structure a little and failed to exploit the opposition being a man-down. However our defence stayed composed and Richard and Sholto kept the majority of the shots at bay. William made some good saves when required. The brave injured Banbury player returned to the pitch amidst a round of applause and Hawks stepped up a pace. Timon drove through the middle and scored the last goal of the match. Final score: 4-1.
An excellent performance all round, well done boys. Fingers-crossed we won't have to wait too long for the next match!
