After an inspiring rendition of "I can feel it coming in the air tonight " (including the full drum solo) by Yas and some hearty cheering as Captain Phil instructed us on the day's formation, the ladies 6s were feeling pumped and ready to take on opponents Amersham and Chalfont.
The 80s hit and inspiring team talk seemed to have done the job as Hawks began to dominate after a few minutes of uncertain end to end play. The team kept the pressure up, and Molly had several cracking runs, taking on the opposition's defence single handedly (sometimes literally with some impressive speedy legs and one handed dribbling).
Clever and simple hockey from Hawks kept up the pressure and secured a short corner. A straight strike from (Rom?) forced the keeper to make a save, Pip was also denied, before Kayleigh slotted in her first goal for Hawks!
The ladies 6s continued their display of beautiful team hockey, putting into practice the excellent use of triangles and transfers which they had worked on in training, and were unlucky not to score another goal.
The team went into the half time break feeling confident, the opposition had yet to make a shot on target or win a short corner.
Buffy in her role as manager/subs bench runner/coach/top fan/statistician continued to give the likes of Mourinho et al a run for their money, and authoritatively directed the team from the side.
It is possible that one too many sour sweets, or a dash of hubris, struck the plucky side down. Amersham and Chalfont came out hard and Hawks were forced on the defensive. Brilliant clearances at the back from Phil and Jess, as well as a man of the match performance by Harriet, kept Hawks ahead. Pip was denied again as a cracking shot ran just wide of the post.
Unfortunately the opposition won a short corner and converted it, and shortly followed up with another successful attempt on goal.
Hawks rallied and threatened to equalise in the dying minutes of the game. However, the last push had come a little late, and the team were unable to take away any points.
Morale was raised by the excellent lemon drizzle cake and chocolate tiffin kindly provided by Jan, and reports of Veggie Dahl for teas.
Like Phil (Collins), the team can feel a win coming in the air/hockey pitch soon. Hopefully, unlike Phil, we won't be waiting all our lives!
Thanks to Jacks and Rachel for blowing their whistles for us and to Evelyn Hargraves for the great photos.
