After four losses so far this season, the Ladies 6s were hoping for a win in this friendly against new kids on the block, the Reading Riots. We got off to a shaky start and Reading dominated for the first 15 minutes. Our first shot on goal came in the 17th minute, unfortunately it was unsuccessful and followed by a string of defensive shorts. L6s defence put up a good fight and Reading failed to score. Another shot on goal by Hawks was saved by an impressive karate-style, mid-air kick from a Reading player, resulting in a penalty flick for us. Pip took a cracking shot and their goalie had no chance - 1-0 to L6s. A good bit of play between Yas and Linda led to another chance for Hawks, alas the ball just missed the post.
At half-time sub manager/team statistician Buffy relayed her findings: we had a total of 4 shots on goal and the opposition 8 in the first half, if we wanted to keep the lead we would need to up our game. After a team talk from Phil and sweetie sugar boost, we were ready for the 2nd half.
Reading came out strong and quickly scored their first goal. Hawks nearly regained the lead but unfortunately were just wide of the goal. Reading had several shorts in quick succession and managed to score again. As energy levels and motivation dropped, Reading were able to score another two goals in quick succession. However, Hawks rallied and attempted to even out the score line - no such luck. Valiant defending by Hawks, in particular Jan who continued to mop up throughout the game and was voted a well-deserved POM.
Thanks to Phil and Jan for organising, Buffy for sub management and Rom for the delish cake(/biscuit?).
