Exe made the long journey up the M5 to face the Ladies 1s on a chilly but sunny Saturday at BRN. The L1s welcomed Kim Karditsas to the side, making her National League debut for Hawks, and started superbly – dominating the first quarter. They had the lions share of possession, with player of the match Becca Edwards causing havoc all over the pitch, but just couldn’t convert in the critical area. The second quarter continued to be a dominant one for the home side, and they went 1-0 up soon in, with a good finish from a penalty corner by Claire Werlinger. However their lead didn’t last long as a defensive slip up let Exe in, and their centre forward finished well. Hawks still continued to create chances and win corners but were not able to take advantage.
In the second half Exe came back into the game, enjoying more of the ball. Millie Lane in the Hawks goal had to be alert to thwart a couple of attacks, but the home side still created chances of their own, with Gemma Croker doing some great runs along the baseline. It wasn’t until the final quarter when Hawks retook the lead, when Jemina Spurr drove down the right and crossed in for Claire Werlinger to deflect home her second goal. However with just seconds left on the clock, Exe won a corner which they converted with a good drag flick into the corner of the goal, leaving Hawks frustrated to have only one point to show for their good performance.
