In their first home match of the season we welcomed Amersham and Chalfont to BRN for their first ever South Masters league game. The sun was shining and spirits high as the players gathered and warmed up slightly more gently than the men’s 1st X1 opposition who had decided to share the pitch for a while!
Typical of an Eagles team there were representatives from Hawks, Witney and Oxford and a handful of Sunday only players so a minute or two was also taken to learn names and work out short corner defence and attacking options.
It was the Eagles who had the best of the first quarter with numerous attacks and attempts on goal. They could have taken a comfortable lead but were caught unawares by a quick break that led to Amersham and Chalfont being delighted when the ball was swept past the GK and they went 1-0 ahead a little against the run of play. 20 minutes gone, was this going to be another of those days?
Going behind seemed to galvanise the Eagles into action however and the perfect response came 5 minutes later when Kim coolly slotted home, and then three minutes Tam skilfully lifted a crossed ball into the net for the Eagles to take the lead. Amersham and Chalfont heads went down and a third was scored before half time, this time by Pip picking up a pass from Kim and making no mistake.
Wise words from Sue and Tam at half time. Keep our structure to create space for easy passes; don’t over commit in attack so there is cover on the break and space to pass round. This was executed well in the second half and Eagles maintained confident control throughout the second half. It resulted in a series of well worked team goals all skilfully finished. Credit to the linking between lines and to the forwards who made leads and found space from which to pass and shoot. The goals came from Kim (44min) Karen (45th) Pip (53rd) and a lovely diving tip in from Tam for her second on 56th. She was looking to get her hattrick as she shaped up to shoot but was beaten by the final whistle.
Thanks to Charlie and Les for blowing the game and to Amersham and Chalfont for playing in such a competitive and friendly spirit. We look forward to the return game in the New Year.
