The Ladies 1s faced Basingstoke on a very soggy afternoon, keen to get a win after the disappointment of their narrow loss the week before. They started brilliantly, stringing some lovely passages of play together, and opened the scoring with after good work down the right. The ball was crossed into the Claire Werlinger who dived to get in front of her defender and deflect the ball into the goal. Basingstoke had some good attacks of their own but nothing that the Hawks defence couldn’t handle – Harri Hargreaves, on her National League debut in particular being on fine form!
In the second half, Hawks created a number of good chances, with efforts from Sandra and Keely narrowly wide or saved. However it was Basingstoke who had the best chance to score, after being awarded a penalty stroke when the umpire deemed Millie in goal to have taken out the attacker. However Basingstoke were denied their equaliser as Man of the Match Millie saved the stroke brilliantly, much to the delight of the very wet crowd. The game could have gone either way from then, with both sides having chances, but it was not until the last minute when Hawks killed the game off, with a great finish from Rachel Moore after a well worked corner routine.
Thanks to Evelyn for the great photos!
