Epsom strengthened by a few of their London League Vets A team players proved very strong opponents for the travelling Hawks team on Saturday afternoon.
After a wet drive across the country and with a changed team from the first weeks fixture, Hawks started a little slowly whilst Epsom started fast and were unlucky not to be 2-0 up within the first ten minutes, but for some excellent work in defence from Wilsdon, Heinrich, Blomley, Kaye and Jones.
The Falcons gradually grew into the game but having been under the kosh tried to force things a little too much, so it was probably against the run of play when Doggett finished a well worked move and gave Hawks a 1-0 half time lead.
The team talk was about not forcing the play, trying to not give away possession and pass the ball better.
The second half performance was much better but Epsom grabbed a deserved equaliser when the defence were split by an excellent through ball and Carlos the Epsom centre forward took the ball wide of the otherwise infallible Wilsdon, regained composure and rifled the ball into the net.
That only served to make Falcons raise their game further and through the midfield performances of Warner and Sellers feeding both Whitey's and Doggett up front the team won a series of 5 short corners. Burrell was injecting well to Warner who was getting strikes on goal but a mix of a determined goalie and stoic defence Epsom were not in a mood to relinquish the lead again. However, they could do little to stop the fast reactions of both David and Mark White who seized on the rebounds to give Falcons a 3-1 victory.
Callout performances from: Wilsdon, Sellers, Jones and Heinrich.
