The annual local friendly Derby between Hawks L6s and Oxford L5s had a slightly different feel than in past seasons. Played under blue skies, warm sunshine with new faces as expected but with the additional challenges of one-way signs, social distancing, hand sanitising and QDPR scans required to negotiate. All this meant that Oxford were well into their warm up by the time L6s had even rolled up onto the pitch.
With RomIlly in charge of the short warm up the new faces of Kayleigh, Harriet, Jessica, Teyha and Anna were introduced into the 3-some playing bubbles that were supposed to aid the subbing during the game. Captain Phil opted to blow the whistle as umpire for the first half and the team soon settled into some solid attacking and defending. Deadlock was broken halfway through the first half when a defensive huddle or perhaps that should have been muddle allowed Oxford to take the lead. Not to be out played Hawks fought back with some great connections down the right to find Molly able to pass across the D to the ever eager Pip who slotted the ball into the goal for the equaliser. 1-1 at halftime and a change in Hawks umpires was made.
The second half started and Hawks immediately were putting Oxford under sustained pressure. Anna took her opportunity to slot in a 2nd goal just inside the left post. Oxford continued to work their triangles and had several chances to get back level but some great clearances from GK Teyha, Harriet and Kayleigh prevented any further scores from the opposition. A disputed 3rd goal scored by Romilly was allowed to stand after the umpires consulted and agreed they had been no foul play. Then Pip finished off the game with her second goal struck well as her back was to goal. A couple of minutes later the final whistle went and the 4-1 Hawks victory was sealed.
Thanks to Annie/Molly for the cookies; to Buffy and Yas for taking a turn to umpire and to the whole team for keeping their distance!
Player of the Match (and cake baker for the next game?) was Kayleigh.
