Oxford Hawks men’s 4’s emphatically dispatched Oxford 3s 6-1 in sweltering conditions at BRN.
It was a lively opening five minutes. Hawks were patient in possession, yet purposeful in and around the oppositions’ D. Thanks to two fine finishes from Martin Pickup and Matt Northfield, Hawks found themselves 2-0 up.
An impressive third goal soon followed. With Hawks continuing to dominate possession, Chris Pittaway picked the ball up just outside the oppositions’ 25-yard area and drove aggressively towards the byline on the right-hand side of the pitch. As he entered the D, Pittaway continued to hug the byline and, with the opposition expecting the ball to find a Hawks player on the penalty spot, he simply dribbled the ball all the way towards Oxford’s goal line and tapped the ball in to make it 3-0.
As the game wore on, the searing temperature and lack of match fitness caught up with Hawks. Nonetheless, the men in maroon made their squad of sixteen count and went on to add a further three goals in the second half. A brace from Matt Oakes and a goal from debutant, Benji Torrance, capped a pleasing performance for the 4s as they ramp up preparations for the forthcoming season in MBBO division two.
Despite an impressive performance in goal from young Ben Pearce, a clean sheet wasn’t to be for Hawks. In the final play of the game, Oxford clinched a consolation goal with a well dispatched short corner, but the day belonged to the home side.
Beers and burgers followed- the events of the past few months were forgotten as Hawks basked in the glorious BRN sunshine.
