For the first outing of the new 2020-21 pre-season campaign, Hawks Ladies 2s faced a Henley side who we knew would be strong competition as a local rival. With things a little different in terms of preparation and match day, we arrived at BRN ready for an exciting game and looking forward to playing together as a group for the first time.

Hawks were in the ascendency from the off, building phases of very flowing and attacking hockey which Henley struggled to match. We capitalized early creating a short corner opportunity which resulted in a penalty stroke, thanks to some great play from Laura Scragg. Man of the match Rosie Abbott stepped up and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper to take us 1-0. We maintained our dominance throughout the first half and went into half time in the lead.

The second half was a different story entirely. Hawks struggled to move the ball from defence through to attack meaning Henley had much more possession than we would have liked. We weren’t able to play the style of hockey that we were used to and as a result, found ourselves at 1-1 for the majority of the half. With around 10 minutes to go though, we found our rhythm again and were able to re-establish our dominance in the game. We passed the ball easily from defence through midfield and had a flurry of attacking opportunities, one of which we converted with 5 minutes left on the clock. 2-1 was the final score after some effective game management saw the game out for Hawks.

Overall a very useful pre-season game and one which we can take many positives from. Looking forward to another week of training in preparation for our game against Oxford next week.

Thanks to Evelyn Hargraves for the excellent photos.
