England hockey deemed that the quarter finals of this seasons 035 tier 2 competition could continue , and there was great excitement on Sunday afternoon as Taunton Vale made the journey from the West to take on a Hawks O35s team.
It was good to see new and familiar faces and some who haven’t played that often in recent seasons and turn out to be part of this great group of players .... where do we take a long corner from Sandra?
Distanced warm ups completed the game started at a fast pace and Hawks were the first to attack. Tam Pascoe led the way with a well struck shot rattling the cross bar, and the ball hitting the frame again only a moment or so later. In response Taunton attacked and it was only thanks to good saves from Linda and some committed tackling that they didn’t score.
Back at the other end a penalty corner rebound was slotted home in the reverse by Kelly Fogden to put the home team in the lead after 10moms of play. The game continued to ebb and flow with chances at both ends either saved or missed. Kelly put one over the bar from close quarters and Taunton misfired too on a couple of occasions. Hawks probably had the better of the half and felt confident in their half time team talk.
Unsurprisingly Taunton came out strongly, pressing hard and putting the ball under pressure. It was only a couple of minutes before the scores were even after a cross from the left found a forward open at the top of the D and she scored with a good strike to corner of the goal.
Shortly afterwards an intercepted hit out and a quick attack saw ever dangerous Sandra Roche in front of goal, but the ball fired wide of the post. A possible 2-2 score soon became 3-1 as a foot on the line conceded a penalty flick taken confidently by the Taunton forward. 3-1 and 20 minutes to play Hawks did not give up and had a period of pressure leading to chances that required saves from the keeper. It was not to be however and 3-1 was the final scoreline.
There were some tired legs at the end after a strong commitment from the whole squad; and disappointment that Hawks 035s won’t progress to the semi final. However it was a great achievement to hold our first match at BRN with all the COVID measures in place and a huge thank you to birthday girl Jacqui Barlow for all the hard work in doing the admin and getting the team together.
Thanks also to H for getting the pitch ready, as well as the umpires and supporters .
