Ladies 5s earn 3 much needed points

07 March 2020, 10:00, Banbury Road North (Top)

Ladies' 5s 6 - 5 Abingdon Ladies 1s

It was a great game for the fives today, with a great warm up lead by Sophie. Having struggled to score all season, we started really strongly with three goals in the first 8 mins from Pip (2 mins in!), Sherene (3 mins in) and Pip again at 7 mins. There was also great defending in the first ten mins. We made loads of great connected passes down the pitch towards goal, and the goals were very much a team effort. Maintaining our starting energy in the first 20 mins, Pip scored again. Great marking from the defence.  Abingdon score two the first half :( . Sophie suffered a nasty injury, unfortunately leaving us with 12 players but we stayed strong throughout the last of the first half (Pip scoring yet another goal at 26). Winning a short corner then turned to a stroke taken by Pip and put brilliantly in the top left corner (33 mins in). Second half had an early short that we couldn’t convert to a goal. Great strikes on goal that were defended or wide. More corners were won but still no goals. Defence continued to deny Abingdon chances in D. Still made great passes down the pitch. Abingdon score with raised ball this gives them great confidence and the start to want the ball a lot more. Last 10 mins were tough as Abingdon really pulled together but we maintained possession and the lead. It ended 6-5 with Lucia as MOM.
