Fresh from our victory against Wycombe and a strong draw against Witney, Hawks made the short hop to Iffley Road to take on Oxford University 2s, who are battling it out with Phoenix and Sonning at the top of the Prem 2 table. The Uni were varsity fit and fresh from a double figure win in the university leagues.
Hawks fielded a strong team with plenty of support on the sidelines, and got off to a good start against a confident Oxford Uni side. Hawks held the ball in midfield and created a few chances to attack with leads from the inners and forwards, but Oxford Uni quickly found their form and entered into a long phase of attack, resulting in their first goal - 1-0 at half time.
The Uni came out hard in the second half and quickly put away their second goal, consolidating their lead and drawing out all the creativity and composure our defense could muster. Evelyn made some excellent saves against confident shooting from Oxford, and once they hit 2-0, their manager made a smart call to switch to a full press and hold the ball in Hawks half, after which it was difficult for Hawks to threaten the Uni's keeper.
The end result was 2-0, with Hawks feeling rather relieved to have contained the damage in what could have been a bigger scoreline.
