The Ladies 3s faced Marlow on Storm Dennis Day and were delighted to take all three points. Goals from Helen McAll (2) and Beth Farrant sealed the win, which takes them up to 5th place - but only 3 points away from 2nd!
Thanks as ever to Evelyn Hargraves for the excellent photos!
Despite Dennis’s best intentions, the Ladies 3s claimed a well-earned victory over Marlow’s Ladies 2s at home on Saturday, continuing to climb up the table.
The game kicked off quickly with a legendary goal from Helen McAll in the first 5 minutes, from a well picked pass in from the edge of the circle by Zoe Lamb following some strong opening play. While tempted to celebrate for the rest of the half, Marlow ensured we stayed focused as they upped the pressure and the defence had to stay composed as Marlow harboured a lot of skilful players (and probably the tightest press I have ever seen). This led to a close half with a lot of defensive work and Hawks were pleased to come off still 1-0 up.
Half time was well needed in the conditions and the captains gave an ever-inspiring speech over our storm-induced screaming. However, evidently Marlow had been geared up too, as a very close game ensued. The game went end to end with some good attacking play from both teams, and Hawks was lucky to have Kayleigh in goal – Player of the match and complete hero all game long. Despite this, 20 minutes in we conceded, Marlow bringing the game to 1-1, just catching us on the break with some clinical play close to the goal. Luckily the 3s – feisty and mighty as ever – took this frustration and won a penalty corner about 45 seconds later, converting with an iconic slap from Beth Farrant. Hyped up and spurred on by some soaking but much appreciated support on the side-lines, hawks amazingly stepped up even more and the team put in a brilliant shift with Helen putting another ball in, taking the lead to 3-1 with only few minutes to go. The team played one of their best games and a lot of hard work and dedication on the pitch from every player prevented any more concessions, leading to an incredible and much deserved, frankly league-winning celebration as the whistle blew.
