Ladies 1s in stunning win against table-topping Surbiton
15 February 2020, 14:00, Surbiton HC
Ladies' 1s 5 - 1 Surbiton Ladies 2s
Oxford Hawks travelled to London to play Surbiton, who were 7 points clear at the top of the table at the start of the day. Hawks, keen to bounce back after a disappointing performance the previous week, started well, playing lovely passing hockey all over the pitch.
Hawks took the lead in the second quarter, after a reverse stick cross from Emily Smith was deflected in by Claire Werlinger. However Surbiton levelled a few minutes later with an outstanding strike which rocketed into the roof of Millie Lane’s net. Hawks bounced straight back and created more chances, with Hie Sawyer on outstanding form throughout, but the score remained 1-1 until the break.
In the third quarter Hawks were put under huge pressure by Surbiton but weathered the storm brilliantly, and then took the lead with a goal from Caro Harris. Minutes later they struck again, with a perfectly executed corner routine finished by Werlinger. Going into the final quarter, Hawks were put under more pressure but contained it well, and then some outstanding skill from Smith resulted in Sam Jacobs scoring a fourth from close range. Surbiton then threw everything forwards, taking their keeper off for the last ten minutes. However the change backfired as Hawks continued to attack well and then scored a simple fifth from a corner, as Bex Oakes deflected in Harris’ strike. The final whistle blew minutes later to wrap up an outstanding team performance and well deserved three points.
