The ladies 2s had a short journey to Oxford Brookes to play against local rivals Oxford 1s who are currently top of the league. Having already beaten Eastbourne who are second in the table, we were ready to rise to the occasion. The first half consisted of a constant battle for possession, with sticks flying into tackles and a green card from Alice Potter. Fortunately, she redeemed herself and came straight back on finish off a great team move giving Hawks the lead just before the half time whistle.
The second half was more settled to begin with and we managed to win a penalty corner. With the first shot on goal being saved, the ball found itself at the top of the D where Jemma Robson slapped the ball to Helen Nicholson on the left post who put it away into the back of the goal. With growing confidence, we found great intensity and composure on the ball. Hawks found their third goal from a messy sea of sticks in the ugly zone, where there were multiple goal line saves from Oxford but Helen managed to flick it top corner which just crossed the line before the opposition reached it.
The 2s were ecstatic to be leading 3-0 and continued to hold the lead until 5 minutes before the final whistle when one of our defenders was put under pressure at the top of our defensive D. Unfortunately, Oxford found a pass in the D leaving a one on one with the keeper giving oxford their first and last goal, leaving the final score at 1-3.
This won't go down as one of the ladies 2s best flowing hockey displays, but in terms of grit, doing what's needed to win and rampant attacking play - it's up there. The ladies are on a great run of form, gaining 7 out of a possible 9 points since Christmas.
