Oxford Hawks Ladies' 1s journeyed east to London to face Wimbledon in their last warm up game before the league restart. Wimbledon, high flyers in the National League East, started well putting a lot of pressure on the Hawks defence. The home side opened the scoring with a well worked move down the right, well finished by their centre forward with a sliding dive to reach the ball. Hawks settled and levelled shortly after with a well taken rebound from Catherine Reaney after Caro Harris’ short corner effort was initially saved. Hawks then took the lead after a great attacking move started at the back, where Hie Sawyer showed outstanding stick skills to run past three Wimbledon players before calmly slotting past the keeper.
In the second half Wimbledon stepped up a gear and scored two goals in quick succession to make the score 3-2. They then extended their lead with a well taken goal, but Hawks pulled one back through Caro Harris. The away side pushed for the equaliser, winning a number of corners in the last quarter but Wimbledon defended well to hold on to the win. A great contest, and the perfect warm up game for Hawks as they build up for their league game against Oxford University on Saturday.
