M3s have 4 - 4 thriller away at Oxford

07 December 2019, 14:30, Oxford Brookes

Men's 3s 4 - 4 Oxford Men's 2s

It was a cool and dry day in oxford. The last game for Christmas. No birds or furniture in sight as the team casually chattered on the side line waiting for Chris their fearless leader to take them on the warmup.

Some tried to discuss tactics, strategising on formation, how to press, communication channels on the pitch all key elements of how to be successful in what looked to be an exciting game. The warm up began with a nice jog which promptly stymied the tactics chat. These were then able to be clarified during the stretching circle in which Robbie Scruggs passed his ball around to the entire team. It should be noted that the tactics that were discussed were all promptly ignored as soon as the game started.

As the team returned from the warm up it became apparent that the game prior was a little delayed and we would only have a few minutes to finalise our warm up on pitch, so 8 minutes on the ball, 2 minutes team chat. Fraser suggested that the 2 minute team chat could be had prior to final warm up as realistically what would be said would not time sensitive. This was quickly dismissed as an idiotic idea as how could Chris talk about the energy in the warm up before we’d done the warm up. Robbie also came up with a few suggestions but Chris then felt that all the suggestions were a distraction and might cause players to have a bad game. There was a polite suggestion that Chris can’t really blame it on that every week.

We got access to the pitch and the warm up was short but sweet, for the 8 minutes allotted to it. As we came in for the huddle Chris identified the level of energy in the warm up and suggested we go out and win the game. With those words of wisdom we were ready.

The first few minutes the hawks were under extreme pressure. Eventually conceding an early goal. The team adapted their play and then after a period of back and forth hockey Fraser scored after a perfectly floated pass by Anton into the D allowed him to scrabble it past the keeper. A few minutes later Pickup scored followed by another by Chris.

Just before the end of the second half Brooks scored their second. Leaving the half time score at 3-2 in favour of the hawks.

In the second half James scored another along with another concession. However several moments required interventions by Jack Sobey who would go on to be nominated MOM. With the final score of 4-4. I would write more on the second half but I left the field thinking we had lost the match.
