Having attended a team meal, the previous evening the Ladies 3’s were feeling bonded by fun facts and morale was high. Not even the return of soggy Saturdays or the lack of changing rooms could knock our spirits. Although the Labyrinth that is Altwood School, did nearly see a few of the players unable gain access to the pitch or toilets.
“See-saw. Fluidity. Outcomes”
The team objectives for this game. Arguably a statement that could rival Coubertin’s Olympic moto; Faster. Stronger. Higher.
Fifteen minutes into the game, the team were compensated for their relentless pursuit of OUTCOMES and rewarded a well-earned penalty corner. Opting for a highly rehearsed routine, the “straight to Rosie at the left slip”. Admittedly the name could do with some work. An unconventional (some may say accidental) deflection from Kasey sees the 3s go 1-0 up.
Fired up from going a goal down Maidenhead came back at 3s hard. Breaking quick and pressing very high. Hawks responded well to this by equally stepping up. With the mids and forwards working FLUIDLY to exploit the gaps made by the Maidenhead press. Aiding outletting from the back and making the team look dangerous going forward. Despite some superb passages of play no more goals would be seen before half time.
At half time Jelly Babies were eaten and the recipe to success see-saw, fluidity and outcomes recited.
Straight from the off hawks looked hungry for another goal, attacking with pace and get several good shots off. Unfortunately, Maidenhead too were hungry for a goal, with a well-executed corner seeing them back into the game with 10 minutes left on the clock.
Hawks did not let this phase them and continued to work the ball up the pitch as a team. Leading attacks from the back via a controlled SEE-SAW and defending from the front. Hawk’s persistence would see them be rewarded with yet another penalty corner. A straight strike from the top and an equally good save from the keeper saw the ball land in the ugly zone. Bethan was quick follow this up. After this not much else is known about how and who put the ball across the line. So, if anybody (preferably somebody in my fantasy team) would like to step forward and claim this goal, please do…
Final score was 2-1 Hawks. Another great team performance and win for the Ladies 3s.
Special mention goes to the POM, Kara Kerr for her fabulous “wee cheekies” and general dominance in the middle.
