Hawks Ladies O35s hosted Olton & West Warwick Ladies O35s in the first round of the Tier 1 O35s cup. It was always going to be a tough game with an Olton side that included many of their national league players including an ex GB international.
The Hawks team featured players from L1s-L5s plus a few that had previously played for Hawks but were taking a “rest” from the game – I am quietly confident that the game rekindled a few memories and we will soon see some of them back regularly in a Hawks shirt …. once their bodies stop aching and they feel human again! Line ups confirmed, warm up complete and the game was on.
In the first 10 minutes the game was evenly contested, fast and furious, end to end, shots on goal and both keepers making great saves. A goal for Olton was disallowed for a foot but Olton soon took the lead with a well converted field goal. Hawks reacted well but were unable to convert their chances with efforts from Sandra, Odders and Sarah turned away from goal. The game was stretched from end to end but it was Olton who doubled their lead with a neatly taken penalty corner followed quickly by another field goal. At 0-3 the score didn’t feel that it reflected play but Hawks battled hard and were soon rewarded by a strike from Sandra. Hawks continued to drive hard into Olton’s circle which resulted in Kathryn netting a goal from a penalty corner. 2-3 …. Game on. But within the last 5 minutes of the first half, Olton scored another two goals to make it 2-5 at half time.
With the lights on for half-time (it was just before 2.30 in the afternoon) Andy Clark rallied the troops and Hawks came out for the second half determined. However, Hawks were reduced to 10 for two minutes with Kathryn receiving a green card for a stick tackle. Olton made the most of their advantage with another well worked goal from open play. No further goals in the next 17 minutes, a green card for an Olton player due to “chat”, tireless work from Bex Oakes, Caro and Apples in the middle of the pitch. Kelly played a neat ball to Zoe at the back post but was unable to beat the keeper, Rebecca, Susan, Becky and Catherine worked endless up and down the flanks. But with all the effort, it wasn’t to be. Olton scored two more goals before the final whistle to make the score 2-8.
A great team effort from a bunch of girls that hadn’t previously played together. The energy from the team was outstanding. The team now go forward into round 2 of the Tier 2 O35s cup on 8th December.
