Eliiott scores superb equaliser to share points with Henley

26 October 2019

Men's 7s 3 - 3 Henley Men's 5s

This was always going to be a challenging game with most of the team's midfield away without permission.

Much complex negotiation occurred around selection, the likes of which would put Boris to shame, and the acquisition of Finlayson senior made all the difference here.

The game started much as the Alamo must have been, pretty constant pressure in the Hawks half, with the skipper unashamedly looking for route one escape a la big Sam....

As the half progressed, birthday boy Theo made his usual game saving saves and then, via a route one 16 from the skipper, up to Darby,  Steve Elliott managed to stick the ball in the net much to the home sides disbelief...

Half time 1-0 , with all fearing the expected 2nd half onslaught from Henley.

Possibly due to their pointless start to the season, the oppo had a very "un-league 8 like" 20 year old playing who took an increasingly important role in the game as the 7's struggled to keep up with him and soon after the restart, Henley got their goal. Somehow Hawks managed to take the lead again with more route one relief and Shambles slotted home from a short...

Back to constant pressure, with Finlayson's aerial clearances being used more and more, and with all credit due, Elliott mainly controlling them!! more shorts were conceded however, and Henley manged to score a second then a third as all seemed a lost cause from then. Henley thought they had the 3 points in the bag, but they hadn't allowed for the never say die attitude of our team, and again, via a long ball up, Steve Elliott managed to smash the ball into the top right hand corner from just inside the D.....there was disbelief from both teams and then elation from the Hawks team...the whistle went soon after.

This was as good as a victory.

Mentions in dispatches to everyone, but to name a few, Charles Darby battled well up front, Ollie Graham helped the ball up well and was a good foil to James Finlayson who gave their young tyro in midfield a good run for his money, and MoM Steve Elliott for his brace, but especially that amazing equaliser.
