After a lengthy car journey the Men’s 3s got off to a slow start. During the warmup captain Chris led the team to a hidden tennis court behind the pitch which led to some members of the team getting lost before even stepping onto the pitch.
Having found each other the first half soon began and unlike the warmup it was fairly uneventful. We entered the half time talk at 0-0 with West Hampstead perhaps having the better chances. Thanks to another inspiring team talk we were eager to get back on the pitch.
We started the second half with far more energy and intent and we soon reaped the rewards. After a delicate ball into the circle and a possible stick tackle on Matt Northfield (who immediately appealed for a penalty corner) the ball fell to Ed Wilkinson. Ed then proceeded to stuff it into the top corner from a tight angle on his reverse side. No doubt one of the goals of the season already and a key moment in the match.
West Hampstead reacted positively by moving their press 5 yards in from the halfway line. This period of pressure was ended with a quality goal from our leader Chris Pittaway who happened to be in the right place at the right time to steer in a wayward shot at the back post. Thanks to a great game in goal from Boggs who made several key saves we managed to keep a clean sheet and carry the 2-0 score line to the final whistle.
