On a fine, autumn day Hawks Ladies 6s made their way to the royal city of Windsor to battle against the Ladies 2s. On arrival, Phil and Jan exhibited their excellent captaincy skills by plying us with a combination of team tactics talk, rice krispie cakes and flapjacks. Unfortunately, the sugar rush failed to energise the Hawks team and we were slow to get going on the pitch. This allowed Windsor to sneak in an early goal, likely caused by a marking mishap, and the ball slowly and painfully rolled across the line. A disappointing start to the match, it nevertheless motivated Hawks to improve their game play, and marking in particular, and the rest of the half was more even with a few unsuccessful shots on goal by Hawks.
At half time, a team talk by Phil and morale boost with Jan’s sweet treats helped focus our minds and lift our spirits. Perhaps it was the pep talk, or maybe the sugar rush finally kicked in, but the second half was more fruitful with a Hawks goal 15 minutes in. The goal was an exhibition of excellent hockey playing, with good passes between Alice and Phil, a great run up the wing by Molly, followed by a perfect shot on goal by Linda.
At this point the match was fairly even, with 50/50 possession and some good playing by both sides. A foul by Windsor, picked up by the excellent referees, meant Hawks were given a short corner with only five minutes to go. Despite being injured, Lotty converted the short corner with a great strike on goal. This second goal led to a huge moral boost for Hawks, and we managed to hold on to our lead despite a tense few minutes of multiple short corners for Windsor.
A victorious Hawks team were rewarded with yummy post-match teas of pizza+chips accompanied by rocky road made by Lina (and friend!) as last week’s player of the match. This week’s POM was awarded to Zoe for her great efforts at getting the ball upfield as Inner. We hope her baking is as good as her hockey skills!
