A new season, a new division, a new team.

With only 5 regular previous season 6's players and a further 7 up and coming players we new that this match was going to be challenging, having never played together before.

A beautiful September day ...... but 25 degree heat, wasn't going to help. However Hawks started strong making easy passes and connecting well we put pressure on a slightly startled Bicester. After 3 minutes we were awarded a short corner. A beautiful strike in at goal by Lotty was finished with a deflection from Rosie putting us 1-0 up. This prompted the Bicester team coach to take off her coach top and put on a team shirt.
With their team strengthened Bicester fought hard and before long were rewarded with an equaliser. Our new team managed well under pressure and there was lovely movement through the midfield . Romilly, Sophia and Charlotte had a great debut performance coming into adult hockey for the first time. However Bicester found the back of the net once more, albeit hit across on the back of the stick and therefore disallowed after some discussion between the umpires.
Hawks had renewed hope and a strong run up the right wing by Lotty unfortunately ended in an ankle injury. Half time was called a minute early and sadly that was the end of the game for Lotty.

Back to 1-1 we went into the second half but sadly with no sub.  I don't know what refreshment Bicester had at half time but they came out determined to win. Hawks were under pressure from the off and our halves and backs were under a relentless attack from the opposition. We did however defend very well. Phil made numerous crucial tackles, Jan saved a short corner strike and Buffy scooped a ball off the line that had got past Iona in goal. Bella gave 100% as always and Holly and Yasmin made good clearances up to the forwards.  We were counting the minutes to full time and wondered how long we could keep fighting. With only one minute to go we managed to get the ball away and up to Rosie who made an impressive run over two thirds of the pitch, into the D and a beautiful hit into goal sealed the win. We could not believe it! We were very relieved when the final whistle was blown. Full time 2-1 to Hawks.
Special thanks to Megan and Amy for managing the team for us and to our umpires Jacs and Dave and to Evelyn Hargraves for taking the photos.
