Ladies' 2s 1 - 2 Oxford University Ladies 1s
After an excellent team performance on the weekend the mighty Hawks 2’s despite some old legs feeling tired from training on Tuesday were up for a Thursday night game against Oxford University 1st XI. It was fair to say Oxford looked somewhat more lively in their warm up and were pinging the ball around at pace to some banging tunes before Hawks had even gone for a jog! I can only assume they weren’t out on the beers like most students are on Wednesday night! Hawks were of course quietly confident that their newly formed team consisting of some experienced players and some talented youngsters could give them a good run for their money!
Oxford had quite a loud crowd for a late match on a Thursday evening and this encouragement had them pumped from the outset! They definitely brought the game to Hawks and Hawks initially definitely felt under pressure in defence with the attack not getting much ball. However, Hawks with the level of experience they have and rapid juniors picked up the pace and found themselves frequently in Oxfords defensive 25. Hawks worked tirelessly in and around the D and were unfortunate not to convert on a number of occasions.
Hawks continued to build momentum whilst remaining composed around the back and the game was relatively even in terms of possession. It is fair to say the end to end game was an excellent pre season fitness test! Just when we thought the Oxford team had the edge, after some outstanding skill from Lili, Helen confidently found the back of the end putting Hawks 1 nil up. Unfortunately, this was short lived and quickly followed by a goal from Oxford making it 1 all.
Hawks and Oxford continued to battle hard on good spirit but Oxford managed to sneak a goal in making it 2.1. Unfortunately, with time still on the clock Hawks won a penalty corner but we had to call it a day as the lights went out!! Let’s be honest, we probably should call it a draw.
Bring on the weekend TEAM!
