M1’s Lose Final Match

31 March 2019, 14:00

Men's 1s 0 - 2 Fareham Men's 1s

The M1’s travelled to Fareham on Sunday for their final game of the season knowing that a top three place was guaranteed but with the hosts needing to win to be certain of a play off place for the new EHL Division One next season.  On a sticky surface, the game was fragmented and ball handling was difficult.  But both sides nevertheless created goal scoring opportunities in the first half, Daniel Rayney and Andy Watts guilty of missed chances for Hawks which on another day they would surely have taken.  The game was scoreless at half time and there for the taking by whichever side could find some consistency in the second half.  In the event the game was won by the team that had most to gain, with Fareham finally opening the scoring after forty eight minutes when Hawks keeper Chris Price saved well at a penalty corner only for the ball never to be fully cleared, eventually falling to Niall Stott to make no mistake at the far post. Hawks continued to make circle penetrations of their own, but failed to call on the home keeper to make any meaningful saves other than from a couple of penalty corners.  As the game wore on, so the hosts ascendancy grew and they made the game save when Stott added a second after a run through the inside left channel on sixty two minutes.  Hawks huffed and puffed but never really threatened to blow any house down and Fareham deservedly booked their play off place, still hoping to join Hawks in the new tier of the league next season.  So a rather flat performance to round off what has otherwise been a very successful return to the national league for Hawks.  The team wishes Daniel Rayney and Harry Golding a safe journey back to the southern hemisphere when they return Down Under in the weeks ahead.  A special mention is also reserved for goalkeeper Chris Price who may be retiring from the game and therefore have played his last game for the Club.
