The game we should have won
30 March 2019, 13:30, Wycombe High School
Ladies' 7s 2 - 2 Wycombe Ladies 5s
We expected it to be a tough game as Wycombe were lying second to our third in the league. We started well and scored two goals in the first 10 minutes thanks to terrific strikes by Lizzie Neal. Although we put a lot of pressure on them, we could not score again in the first half. So, we were 2 – 0 up at half time.
We started the second half confidently and strongly. However, Wycombe were beginning to get their act together. Then Emily rolled off in tears – her ankle was giving her a great deal of pain. This was the injury that prevented her playing for the last few weeks. Then Wycombe won a short corner. Deborah, on the line, stopped it but it also hit her legs. The umpire awarded a penalty flick which the Wycombe forward placed firmly in the corner of the goal where Sophia P could not get to it. The score was 2 -1 to us.
We carried on but we were flagging in the hot sun. Wycombe began doing some serious attacks and in the dying minutes of the game they scored again and equalised. The final score was 2 – 2.
Many thanks to everyone who played so hard and especially to Holly Williams who had a stormer of a game as centre half. Not surprisingly, she was voted player of the match.
We were disappointed but thought it would not make any difference to the overall result. We only found out later that Abingdon had beaten Sonning, so they moved up to third and we finished fourth in the league.
