Hawks 2s welcomed Harrow to BRN for an early start at 10am on Saturday. The sun was shining and crowds had gathered to hopefully see the team secure promotion with one game to go. Knowing Harrow were a difficult team to play against, Hawks 2s were determined to play their hockey and bring home the win.
The early stages of the game involved loads of Hawks attacking play, using short sharp passes to move the ball up the pitch and create chances in the D. It was not long before Emma Stephenson pounced on a loose ball to put us 1-0 up. Promotion was within reach! Harrow grew into the game during the latter part of the first half and levelled the match at 1-1. But Hawks struck back by winning a short corner on the stroke of half time, and Hayley Sawyer scored a great deflection to put us ahead at the break. Nearly there!
The crowds continued to gather and feeling excited about our chances, we really took the second half in our stride, scoring another 3 goals. Claire Werlinger jumped on a cross from Emma after gritty defensive work by Vicky Martin, and Abbie Brant scored two great goals in a player of the match performance. The game drew to a close with tempers rising, but Hawks managed their discipline well to finish the game as 5-1 victors and with promotion secured!
Fab work from all in a really important game but one which everyone thoroughly enjoyed and displayed some lovely attacking hockey. The Ladies 2s look forward to closing out the 2018-19 season with another win against Southgate.
Champagne celebrations before midday on a Saturday, what more could you want from a weekend?
