With Phoenix & Ranelagh fighting for points to secure second place in the league we knew this was going to be a tough match despite having beaten them 2- 0 in our last encounter. From the moment the whistle went Phoenix came out hard, immediately putting our defence under pressure.
Both teams were eager for a win, battling hard despite the windy conditions.
We struggled to get our usual flow going and became frustrated, making a number of unforced errors, unable to connect our passing and giving the ball away.
Having initially been reacting to the opposition Hawks began to wake up. We were confident in our passing around the back, taking it through midfield and playing some good hockey in the opposition’s half. We worked hard to win a number of penalty corners but despite some strong strikes which were saved by their keeper, we were unable to get the ball over the goal line. After a period of sustained pressure, Jacs strike from outside the circle was deflected by Pip breaking the deadlock after 25 minutes. The goalie didn’t stand a chance.
Phoenix immediately came back, breaking through the middle, once again putting us under pressure. With some lightning reactions, some super saves and a great clearance, Evelyn kept Phoenix off the score sheet. We finished the first half 1-0.
The second half started with an early break from Phoenix culminating in a shot that went wide. We regained our composure and had some good passages of play but missed some open play scoring opportunities. Against the run of play we were once again defending our goal clearing the ball off our goal line. Back again in the opposition’s D, Sherene won a penalty corner. Sherene’s initial shot was followed up by Ffion but we were still unable to score.
Phoenix never gave up and were rewarded with an equalising goal a few minutes before the final whistle. After a tense second half the match ended 1-1.
Congratulations to Priya for MOM.
