M1's Cup Run Comes To An End

03 March 2019, 14:30

Men's 1s 4 - 5 City of Peterborough Mens 1s

In another tough double-header weekend, the M1's travelled to East Conference side Peterborough on Sunday for their EH Cup quarter final encounter.  In difficult conditions on a very sandy pitch and missing three players, coach Todd Williams decided to employ an unfamiliar 4-4-2 line up.  Hawks started well enough much like the previous day at Havant, but much like the previous day it was Hawks that conceded first on ten minutes.  Hawks replied almost immediately when a direct pass into the circle was squared to Daniel Rayney who finished comfortably from five yards out.  The game ebbed and flowed and Peterborough regained their lead on twenty four minutes.  But Hawks finally managed to put themselves in a position to control the game with two goals in the last four minutes of the first half.  The first was a gift from the Peterborough left half whose attempted aerial pass across the top of his own circle was pulled down by Olie Lobo who coolly slotted past the home keeper.  This was immediately followed by a long penetrating run by Ed Tristem whose pass found Josh Wierszycki in the circle.  A clam finish by the youngster gave Hawks a 3-2 half time lead.  Unfortunately Hawks inability to retain the ball at critical times had followed them from Havant and five minutes into the second half one such turnover led to an equaliser for the home side.  Worst was to follow when Peterborough converted a penalty corner ten minutes later to retake the lead.  With time fast running out, all was starting to look lost for Hawks until they won a penalty corner of their own with two minutes left which was converted by Jack Biggs.  But the game was not over and with seconds left on the clock Peterborough forced another penalty corner.  A well-executed switch move was deflected high into the net from close in, leaving Hawks with no time to try to respond.
